THE PAST CONTINUOUS (THÌ QUÁ KHỨ TIẾP DIỄN)
I. Cấu trúc
(+) S + was/were + Ving
(-) S + was/were + not + Ving
(?) Was/were + S + Ving?
I had 1 wonderful dream last night. I was sitting in a park. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. Children were playing and laughing. It was very peaceful. I didn’t want to wake up.
II. Cách dùng
1. Hành động hay sự việc đang diễn ra tại 1 thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ
- I was practising my English lesson at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
- Tom was watching TV between 7 and 8 o’clock last night.
- This time last year they were visiting Hue.
- What were you doing at that time? – I was playing football.
- Mr. Pike and his son were plating roses all the afternoon on Sunday.
2. Kết hợp với thì quá khứ đơn để diễn tả 1 hành động đang diễn ra trong quá khứ thì có 1 hành động khác xen vào. Hành động đang diễn ra dùng thì QK tiếp diễn, hành động xen vào dùng QK đơn.
- Tom burnt his hand when he was cooking the dinner.
- I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a book. 
- As we were driving down the hill, a strange object appeared in the sky.
- While Laura was sitting in the garden, it suddenly began to rain.
- We were driving down the hill when a strange object appeared in the sky.
=> + As và While (Trong khi) chỉ đi với QK tiếp diễn.
 + When có thể đi với cả QK tiếp diễn (Trong khi) và QK đơn (Thì...).
NOTE: Để diễn tả những hành động nối tiếp nhau trong quá khứ, dùng các động từ ở thì QK đơn.
	When we saw him, we stopped the car.
3. Dùng QK tiếp diễn để diễn tả những hành động cùng đồng thời diễn ra tại thời điểm nào đó trong quá khứ.
- While Peter was practising his French lesson, Susan was mending an old shirt.
- Peter was practising his French while/when Susan was mending an old shirt.
Exercise 1: Put in the correct form of the verbs (The past continuous or past simple)
Rita: 	I hear the lights went (go) out in your flat last night.
Emma: Yes, I was watching (watch) a documentary on TV when suddenly we(1).....................(lose) all the power. But it (2)......................(come) on again after about ten minutes. 
Vicky: Rachel (3)...........................(come) down the stairs when the lights (4)..............(go) out. She almost (5).......................(fall) over.

Exercise 4: Put the verb into the correct tense simple past or past continuous.
