The line graph shows trends in smoking since 1960 for three countries: Holland, Japan, and the USA. As the graph shows, the general trend in the USA, Japan, and Holland is downwards. Holland has the highest percentage of smokers in 1960 at (nearly) 60%, followed by Japan at about 50% and the USA at about 40%. Holland experienced the most dramatic decrease, falling to about 47% in 1980 and then declined at the same steady rate as Japan until 1990, then slightly fell to 38% in the year 2000. As for Japan, the percentage of smokers fell slightly from about 50% in 1960 to 47% in 1980. Japan experienced a dramatic decrease to 35% in the year 2000. USA’s level fell to about 20% by the year 2000. (128 words)

Dogs and cats can be wonderful companions but there are also a number of problems associated with pet ownership for the pets.
In the best situations pets are fed, cared for and loved as part of a family. It is easy to see how much attention is given to pets, by the range of products available in the pet section of supermarkets. However, there are also negative aspects for the pats. The freedom of both dogs and cats are increasingly restricted. Dogs can no longer run free in the parks and the beach but must be kept on leads. In some countries, cats are kept inside at night to protect native birds and animals.
So keeping dogs and cats as pets is a complex thing. More and more the community is intervening to force pet owners restrict the activities and freedom of their pats. Still, responsible owners, prepared to give adequate time and attention to their cats and dogs, can give them a good and happy life (167 words)
