1. Write 3 or 4 paragraphs, each with its own topic.
2. Salutation
Dear Sir or Madam,
( finish with: Yours faithfully, )
Dear Mr. Smith,
( finish with Yours sincerely, )
Do not use:
Contractions
Idioms
Avoid phrasal verbs
Do not use personal language.
3. Paragraph #1 :
A. Say why you are writing.
B. Say where you saw the advertisement
“I am writing to apply for the post of . as advertised in Jobs Abroad Magazine/ The Guardian newspaper/ your website ”
“I would like to apply for one of the scholarships/positions/posts  I saw advertised in your prospectus/ in an advert”
Other examples you can use:
 “I am writing to inquire about”
“I am writing in response to”
4. Paragraph #2: Briefly describe yourself and your situation. Say why you are qualified for the job.
“I have considerable experience of”
 “I consider myself to be..”
 “I would welcome the opportunity to..”
5. Paragraph #3: Say why you are applying for the job/scholarship/ position etc.
“I have considerable experience of.”
 “I have good command of English”
 “I am an experienced..”
6. Paragraph #4: Requesting information and/or request a reply.
“I would be grateful if you could tell me.”
 “Could you please let me know.”
 “I look forward to your reply.”
Part 1 Formal Email/Letter : Writing a complaint ( situations include: bad service experience, wrong product was sent, overcharged for a service or product, the product was delivered late, the product didn’t work, you didn’t get a response from the customer service department when you contacted them to complain.) (120-150 words)

Paragraph #1 :
A. Mention the letter or email you received from your friend.
B. Thank them for the letter/email and make a short comment about what they wrote.
“Thanks very much for your letter. It was good to hear from you.”
“It sounds like you’ve been busy/ having lots of fun”
“How have you been?”
“How are things with  you and your family?”
 “I’m sorry I haven’t written in ages. I’ve been.”
 “I’m sorry I haven’t written sooner, but I’ve been ”
You can  use:
Contractions
Idioms
Phrasal verbs
More personal language
Exclamation marks or
dashes.
4. Paragraph #2: respond to the notes on the input email/letter
5. Paragraph #3: giving a reason to end the email/letter
“Anyway, that’s all for now.”
“I’d better stop here, I’ve got to..”
“Anyway, I must go, as it’s getting late/ I’ve got a lot of homework to do”
6. Paragraph #4: request a reply and sign-off.
“Can’t wait to hear from you.”
 “Write again soon with more news.”

PART 2 : WRITING :  An article, essay, letter, report, review or story. (120-180 words)   
A Review of a book or film (or play).

Paragraph #1
Say what you are reviewing and give key information like:
*Title of book or film
*Type of book/film: comedy, action, thriller, mystery,
*Author of the book or director of the film.
“I recently read/saw..”
“One of my favourite books/films is..”
You can use contractions.
Vocabulary:
Plot, Setting, gripping, violent, special effects, shot in, stunts, funny, location, light-hearted, suspense, performance.
Paragraph #2:
Talk about the setting of the book/film.(where it takes place and when)
Talk about the plot of the book/film ( what the main story is)
Describe what happens with the main character(s) in the book/film.
“It’s set in.”
“It tells the story of.”
“The main character is..”
“There’s a twist in the end.”
“The plot centres on.”
Paragraph #3:
Give your opinions: positive and negative.
“My main criticism of the book/film is”
“I was impressed by”
“The acting was first rate.”
Paragraph #4:
Give your overall opinion and recommendation to read/see it.
“To sum up, I enjoyed../ I wasn’t very impressed with this film/book”
 “I can thoroughly recommend this book/film.”
 “Go and see this film/read this book. You won’t be disappointed.”
 “It’s a must see/read.”
 “I certainly wouldn’t recommend this film/book”
 “Don’t bother reading./going to see.. . It isn’t worth it.”
Part 2 - A report (120-180 words)

Paragraph #1: Write the aim or purpose of the report.
Heading: Introduction
“ The purpose of this report is to..”
“The aim of this report is to show.”
Formal language.
Do not use contractions
* Put a heading for each paragraph *
Paragraph #2: First point or idea/suggestion
Use other vocabulary instead of numbers:
The majority, fifty percent, half, several, most, over ninety per cent..
Paragraph #3: Second point or idea/suggestion
“The survey/report showed that almost half of Americans.”
 “He/she/they said that ..”
 “It was reported that.”
Use indirect/reported speech
Paragraph #4: Second point or idea/suggestion
Paragraph #5: final suggestion and recommendation
“I recommend that.”
“I recommend (verb+ing).”
“I recommend we/you/they should..”
“I suggest (verb+ing)”
“I suggest that..”
 “It would be a good idea to/if .”
Part 2 – An article (120-180 words)

Use informal language
You can use contractions
Paragraph #1: Involve the reader by including a direct question at the beginning.
Give a short summary of your opinion or main idea of your article.
“ Have you ever been to Barcelona?”
“Have you ever tried drinking a glass of hot water every morning?”
“In my opinion, it’s the best city to live in or visit.”
 “It’s a proven way to boost your metabolism every morning.”
“What would you do/think  if.?”
“Can  you imagine.?”
“You might think that.. but..”
3. Paragraph #3: Talk about one main point that you want the reader to be interested in.
“The city of Barcelona has a lot to offer”
 “Studies show that people who drink a glass of hot water every morning ..”
4. Paragraph #4: finish your article by summarizing what you have said and giving your opinion.
“So, if you’re looking to visit one of the most diverse/interesting/ entertaining cities in the world..”
Giving your opinion:
“In my opinion/view.”
“I think/believe that..”
“Personally, I think that..”
Writing 2 – An essay (120-180 words)

1. Paragraph #1: answer the question by making a short statement and introduce arguments for and against.
Formal language.
2. Paragraph #2: Arguments for the subject.
“It seems to me that.”
“In my view/my opinion.”
Making additional points:
“Furthermore”
“In addition’
3. Paragraph #3: arguments against
“Some people think/believe that..”
“It could be argued that..”
Expressing contrast:
“On the other hand.”
“However,”
4. Paragraph #4: Express your opinion
“To sum up, I believe that..”
“In conclusion..”
Writing 2 – A story: You will be asked to begin or end with a sentence given to you in the exam. *read the instructions very carefully*

*  Begin with the sentence given if the instructions tell you to*
Set the scene of the storyinclude the characters, where it takes place and what is happening.
*  You can use contractions.
*  You can use direct or indirect speech.
2. Paragraph #2: First main event.
Vocabulary to use to put events in order:
 As soon as.
While
By the time..
First/next/then.
After a while
Meanwhile..
suddenly.
eventually..
3. Paragraph #3: Second main event.
4. Ending of the story.
* End with the sentence given if the instructions tell you to*
