- Level: Pre-intermediate.

II. TIME: 45m.

III. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

- Develop the reading skill (scan reading).

- Broaden the range of vocabulary related to the topic.

English 11- Unit 13: HOBBIES
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
33 11th grade students, Lomonoxop High School in Hanoi.
Level: Pre-intermediate.
TIME: 45m.
OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: 
Develop the reading skill (scan reading).
Broaden the range of vocabulary related to the topic.
ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE: 
Ss have already known some vocabulary items/ structures related to content of given passage.
ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:
It’s possible to lack time, so teacher had better shorten the last activity.
Ss may not know the techniques to do the tasks, so T should offer them some tips before let them do the tasks.
TEACHING AIDS: Blackboard, picture/ flashcards, textbook, handouts.

Aim: motivate Ss before the new lesson
Technique: Give the instructions (say-do-check) and let Ss play a Slap the board 
- Greet the class
- Introduce the game Slap the board for the class
- Give instruction: 
+ T sticks lots of words all over the board. 
+ T divides Ss into two groups ( A and B) and asks them to play at the same time: one member from each group comes to the front of the class, and stands at equal distance from the black board:
+ T calls out one of the words (in a loud voice), 
+ The players run forward, touch and read aloud the word on the board. The one who slaps the correct word first gets one point for your group.
+ Ss take turns to be the representative. 
+ After 5 – 6 turns the game ends.(Say)
- Model for the class to help them fully understand how to play (Do)
- Make sure that all Ss know how to play by asking some checking questions (Check)
- Let Ss play the game, and control the class.
- Get the whole class to count the points to decide which group is the winner.
List of words: 
going fishing, playing the guitar, singing, swimming, keeping fish, gardening, playing chess, collecting stamps, reading books .
Explain to let Ss guess the topic: HOBBIES
Lead into the lesson.

- Teach vocabulary using different techniques.
Accomplished /ə’kʌmplɪʃt,/ (adj) : well-trained, skilled : tài ba, giỏi, 
Accompany  /ə’kʌmpəni/ (v): play music to support a singer or another instrument: đệm đàn
Modest  /’mɒdɪst/ (adj): humble, not very large: nhỏ, khiêm tốn
Avid /’avɪd/ (adj): eager, exciting : say mê
Discarded /dɪ’skɑ:dɪd/ (adj): thrown away: loại bỏ, bỏ đi.
indulge in /ɪn’dʌldʒ ɪn /: allow oneself the pleasure of: đam mê vào một việc gì
keep me occupied   /ki:p mi ’ɒkjʊpʌɪd/: keep me busy: làm cho ai bận rộn
CHECK VOCABULARY AND TASK 1:
- Divide Ss into 4 groups
- Give instruction
+T prepares a sets of cards: cards A and cards B. Cards A contain the new words and cards B contain the definition or meaning of these words in English, not in Vietnamese. 
+Each group recieve s a piece of paper and a set of cards.
+ They have to match the new word with its definition or meaning by sticking them on the paper. 
+After 2 minutes, exchange their works with other groups to check.

Techniques:
- Read for specific information.

- Meaning guessing skill based on context.
- Base on keywords to find answers while reading
Card checking
TASK 2: T/F
- Ask Ss to work in groups of 4 to scan the text, find these key words/their synonyms, and then decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F) (in 4mins)
- Remind them to highlight the clues that help them to find the answer.
- While Ss do the task, move around to provide help if necessary.

- Check the answers:
 + After 4 minutes, give each group 2 cards with colors: 1 card is red (false), the other is green (true).
 + Check the answers one by one with the whole class by asking Ss to raise the card to give the answer at once.
 + Call some Ss for explanations.
Which groups have the most right answers will be the winner

Technique:
Report
- Ask Ss work in groups of 4 and give each group a handout.
- Give instruction: Ask and answer about hobby.
“ Now, work in group of 4. Ask your friends about hobby to fill information in the table. 
Use some questions:
What is your hobbies?
Which of the hobbies would you like to do?
After 3 minutes, come to the board and report your group ‘s hobby.”
