Exercise 4.
Robbery at Raveloe.
Two bags of gold has just been stolen from the floorboards of a small cottage in Raveloe. That belongs to a weaver named Silas Marner. The thief is still unknown. The most suspicious one is considerd to be the pedlar who has just visited our village recently.
Woman dead in snow.
On the New Year ‘s Eve, a woman was found dead in snow in Raveloe. Her name is unknown. She’s got a wedding ring on but noone know her husband. The two-year-old child , fortunately, is now safe and well. The local weaver who found the child has planned to adopt her.
Body found in quarry.
Yesterday when some working men were draining the Squire’s fields in Raveloe they found the body of a young man in the old quarry. They recognized it was Dunstan Cass , the disappeared brother of Squire Cass due to the watch in rings found on the body . They also found two bags of gold stolen from the weaver ‘s cottage sixteen years old. It’s clear that Dunstan Cass who disappeared for all these years was the thief.
Wedding at Raveloe.
Last week, Eppie, the weaver’s daughter was married to Aaron Winthdrop at church. Nancy Cas bought Eppie the wedding dress and the Squire paid for the wedding lunch at the rainbow. The young couple went to live with their father at their cottage.
My own opinion.
1.I don’t agree with her idea. So many people think that having money is happiness , but others don’t think that. It belongs to each person ‘s attitude and opinion. Money is the means of life .You can’t let our means poor . Moreover , in market economy , poverty is society’s burden. “ A cottage with two gold hearts ” is a fairy tale of last century. We are poor that is guilty to our country.
2.I don’t totally agree with her. Sometimes we can’t do what our parents want because maybe they mistake and don’t really understand what we think .But all that they do and talk to us are from their love. Always remember that they love us and hope best things for us.
3.People can put right mistakes they have made.
Summary.
The story of Silas Marner took place at the beginning of the 19th century in an farming community in England. As the story opened , Silas was wrongly accused by his best friend of stealing money from the church. He lost all his faith in people. He sat in his cottage weaving all day and counting his money by night. The other villagers were very suspicious of him. He hardly spoke and never came to church or the village bar. However, Silas made good cloth and earned plenty of money. After some years he had two bags with full of gold which he hid under his floor. One night when he were
out, a worthless drunk, broke into Silas’s cottage and stole the gold. Silas’s life was even emptier than before.A few months later, a woman and her child are making their way to Raveloe on foot in the winter snow. The woman collapsed under a tree and dies. Her child, a girl of two, wandered into Silas’s cottage and fell asleep in front of the fire. The child, named Eppie, brought Silas back to life. Eppie is in fact the child of the Squire’s older son, Godfrey, brought Eppie to his the second wife, named Nancy. Godfrey and Nancy had no children of their own and adopted Eppie. But Eppie didn’t want riches . Silas’s love was beyond value for her.

Summary.
George, Harris, Jerome( J’ ) and Montmorency were spending an evening in J's room, smoking and discussing various illnesses they fancied they were suffering from and really needed a holiday. Three men eventually decided on a boating trip up the Thames. The next Saturday, they embarked George had to go into work that morning (George went to sleep at a bank from ten to four each day, except Saturdays, when they woke him up and put him outside at two) so J. and Harris make their way to Kingston by train. Unable to find the correct train at Waterloo Station, they resorted to bribing a train driver to take his train to Kingston where they collected their hired boat and started upon their journey. They met George later in the day at Weybridge. The remainder of the story relates their leisurely journey up the river and the incidents that occured . The book's original purpose was apparent as the describes the many landmarks and villages they travelled to such as Hampton Court Palace, Monkey Island, Magna Carta Island and Marlow.
