Emotions focus on human desires Check the following problems in your organization Creation of bond with the organization Motivation and its types Motivation: is an internal process beginning by a desire that drives us to achieve what we want. Motivation can be divided into two basic types: Intrinsic or self motivation and extrinsic motivation. Motivation involves the interaction between people and environment Intrinsic motivation It is defined as the desire of doing an activity for its enjoyable rather than for reward. Examples: - Reading a book because you really enjoy reading. - Drawing pictures because you love art of painting. Extrinsic motivation Extrinsic reflects the desire of doing activities because of external factors such as rewards, promotion, money, praise. Examples: - He decides to work as sales manager because of above average salary. - She write poems to be submitted to poetry contests. How does extrinsic motivation work? Example: Young boys – throw rock at the house. The old man tried to stop by threating calling police but nothing seem to work. Finally, he pay throwing. Children continue throwing. Then he reduced payment. Rock throwing less pleasure and he continued reducing payment, they completely stop throwing. So rock throwing lost pleasure Reducing external reward was insufficient to maintain this action. How does extrinsic motivation work? At work, when behavior becomes too closely linked with external forces, self motivation is lost. And workers work for 2 reasons: to get paid and to avoid fired. There won’t be outstanding efforts. Companies depend too much on external rewards or threat, they will not achieve high performance. External motivation bring result in temporary. What should motivation be? Motivation must come from inside rather than the outside in because deep inside every human being is intrinsic motivation rather than rewards or It should be connected by intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Without this connection, it won’t be maintained for long term. People tend to work until they receive the reward. How does self Motivation work? Motivation connects with releasing (giải phóng, sử dụng) energy which is produced in the factory of human being by food. Positive emotion: feeling happiness, contentment, pride, interest, desire, hope and excitement. Feeling good without energy by victory, compliments, or positive events Feeling good with energy such as interest, excitement or desire. It makes people want to do things, to be creative, productive. Negative emotion: sadness, boredom, anger, resentment, etc. The Motivating and the De-motivating cycles Emotions focus on human desires If organization want to have highly motivated employees, they will have to put much more emphasis on emotions in the future because of emotion and motivation go hand in hand. They will have to stimulate more positive emotions especially desire among their workforces. Manager should create opportunities that encourages team spirit. Desire of meaning People want to feel significant. The more they feel that, the more they strive to make it happens. When understanding the meaning of their contribution to organization or community, individuals tend to work hard and be motivated. It is important to indicate them the value of their job or help them take interest or pride in their work. Manager should match the job to the employees Desire for power“I want to make decision about my work” One of the powerful desire of human being is desire of power. People want to make choice and controls their own destinies In empowering environment, people can release enormous quantities of energy. Encourage or give others the freedom to make decisions, to put their ideas and solutions into practice. Find out what others think of problems and let them help design solutions. They should be given support and tools to do their work. Desire for achievement/ challenge As one of the fundamental factor to happiness, desire of achievement leads people to step right way and to accomplish work on time. It is really interesting for people to carry out a meaningful goal which requires activity at a continuously optimal level of difficulty. Manager should set personally and meaningful goals. Give performance feedback Desire for competence “There is no better feeling in life than the feeling of being competence” Competence brings people to exciting feeling and leads them to learning for mastery at work. An environment with learning and high competence should be created in org. Recognition People always want appreciation or recognition by others for their merits (công lao) and contribution. It is reflected through our appetite for honors, medals, titles (chức vị) and the like. Recognition can be given by diverse ways such as money, gift or a simple of “thank you” Recognize successes and encourage high performance Desire for ownership In daily life, desire for ownership is indicated in the activities of collecting from coins to stamps to homes to cars. Ownership makes people feel better. In working place, such a spirit is reflected in the real pride of employees in their workspace, product, and the company. Employee will release enormous energy if manager simply create an environment conducive (có lợi) to it. Desire for activity It is defined as the human orientation to be active, engaged and to enjoy life. At work place, employee want to have variety of work and be active. They should be motivated by an context of activity and high level of involvement. Check the following problems in your organization Fear Red tape (quan liêu) Anxiety Lack of training Disputes Conflicts Lack of direction Unclear objectives Lack of time and resources Creation bond with the organization Build self-esteem in others by complementing them on good work. Show patient and concern Ask for input and do something with it Provide opportunities for employees to share responsibility for improving work processes and train them to do this Creation bond with the organization Appreciate the quite workers Share vision and ask for ideas Teach employees how to manage their job and encourage them to do so. Tie raises to performance Encourage problem solving and support the solutions employees come up with Show how employee’s efforts are meaningful to organization Communicate with people. Give them something to be excited about.
