Section 2: Language use (60 marks)
I. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow
IDENTITY THEFT
If you use the Internet (and these days who doesn’t), you should be aware of the risks you face and how to prevent being a victim of identity theft.
There are people out there who are scanning the Internet to find names, addresses and credit card numbers that they can use to take something that isn’t rightfully theirs. These are a few tips that can help make you a safer internet shopper.
Only use your credit card with a trusted website: this means that you should normally stick to reputable companies whose names you recognize, and who have also been doing business for some time. If you don’t recognize the company name, there are various lists and verifications provided by independent organizations involved in keeping internet shoppers secure. Check these out if you’re not sure before providing your credit card information.
Make sure the website uses appropriate encryption technology: even if the web company itself isn’t trying to rip you off, there are people out there who are watching who can still do harm if they intercept your card number. If the connection you are using is not secure, think twice before shopping!
Check your credit card statements each month: even small irregularities will sometimes mean that something is wrong. Thieves will sometimes use your card to make a small purchase to see if you will report this to your credit card company. If you don’t, they will then make a much larger purchase.
Why should you use only websites with up to date encryption technology?
Because other sites might try to rip you off.
Because Big Brother is watching you.
Because criminals might be able to decode communication sent to other sites.
Because checks are the only acceptable form of payment.
What is NOT given as an example of a website that may make it unsafe to make a purchase from?
One which does not have verification from an independent organization.
One which doesn’t accept credit cards.
One which doesn’t use proper encryption.
One whose company name you do not recognize.
Why does this article suggest you check your monthly credit card statement carefully?
Because thieves may make a small purchase as a test.
To prevent overspending.
To make sure your kids aren’t using you card behind your back.
To verify the number is correct.
What do the underlined parts refer to?
4. they can use to take something that isn’t rightfully theirs (para. 2)
5. If you use the internet (and these days who doesn’t) (para. 1)
Which words in the passage mean the following?
6. helpful pieces of advice:
7. to cheat someone:
8. putting information into a special code, especially to prevent people from looking at it without authority:
Fill in each blank with suitable words or a phrase from the passage.
9. According to this article are scanning the Internet to get address and other personal information.
