Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions . An air pollutant is defined as a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled - a far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances known today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions. Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, are found in nature. As the Earth developed, the concentration of these pollutants was altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basis, nature's output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities. However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In such a region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentrations that the pollutants would have in the absence of human activities. The actual concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact, the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm. Question 55: What does the passage mainly discuss? A.What constitutes an air pollutant B. The economic impact of air pollution. C. How much harm air pollutants can cause. D. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere Question 56: The word "adversely" in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to _______. A. water vapor is an air pollutant in localized areas B. the definition of air pollution will continue to change C. most air pollutants today can be seen or smelled D. a substance becomes an air pollutant only in cities Question 58: The word "These" in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to_. A. the components in biogeochemical cycles B. the various chemical reactions C. the pollutants from the developing Earth D. the compounds moved to the water Question 59: For which of the following reasons can natural pollutants play an important role in controlling air pollution? A. They function as part of a purification process. VnDoc - Tải tài liệu, văn bản pháp luật, biểu mẫu miễn phí Ngày thi 23/1/2016 Trang 6/7 - Mã đề thi 132 B. They occur in greater quantities than other pollutants. C. They have existed since the Earth developed D. They are less harmful to living beings than other pollutants. Question 60: According to the passage, human-generated air pollution in localized regions _______. A. will damage areas outside of the localized regions B. will react harmfully with natural pollutants C. can be dwarfed by nature's output of pollutants D. can overwhelm the natural system that removes pollutants Question 61: The word "localized" in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to _______. A. beneficial B. special C. measurable D. separable Question 64: Which of the following is best supported by the passage? A. Human activities have been effective in reducing air pollution. B. Scientists should be consulted in order to establish uniform limits for all air pollutants. C. One of the most important steps in preserving natural lands is to better enforce air pollution laws. D. To effectively control pollution, local government should regularly review their air pollution laws. WRITING PART 1. Part II.Write a letter to a pen pal about the importance of family in your life and your family rules. 87 Tran Hung Dao street Thai Binh, Vietnam 23th January, 2016 Dear John, I have received your letter and I feel so glad when knowing that you had passed your examinations with good marks. You want me to tell you about my family rules, and the importance of family in my life? I am always willing to tell you all about my family. Family rules? It's an interesting topic, isn't it? It may be obvious that every family has its own rules. Mine has a few, apart from our traditional rules, especially for this school year as I'm in the final year.First, I'm not allowed to watch TV, nearly no, except when there is a good or interesting movie or when I have finished all my homework and exercises. And never do my parents let me stay up so much late at night.Next my parents don't permit me to go out with my friends without necessary reason for example birthdays.Besides, I have to take a balanced diet to keep fit for my coming exam. And one more thing I have to keep up is talking on the phone, that is I have to set a limit to my using of the phone. For me, family is very important part of my everyday life. It helps me in improving my personality. It also helps me in shaping my life. It teaches me the value of love, affection, care, truthfulness and self-confidence and provides me tools and suggestions which are necessary to get success in life.Family is a place where I can be myself. It is a place where I am accepted for what I am. This is where I am completely tension free and everyone is there to help me. Family encourages me when I am surrounded by problems. It helps me survive through tough times and bring joy and happiness into my life. Now I am preparing for my GCSE examination and the entrance examination. They are very hard for me, but I try my best to pass the exams with good marks. I have told you something about my family rules. How about your family rules? Are you ready to let me know about it? I am really excited to hear about it. And I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best wishes to you, Love, Nam
