Most people think that the order you get, the (1) h…….it is to learn a new language. That is, they believe that children learn more easily and efficiently than adults. Thus, at some point in our lives, maybe around age 12 or 13, we lose the (2) a……….to learn languages well. Is this idea fact or myth? Is it true that children learn a foreign language more efficiently than adults? On the (3) c…., research studies suggest that the opposite may be true. One report, on 2,000 Danish children studying Swedish, concluded that the teenagers learned more, in less time, than the younger children. Another report, on Americans learning Russian, showed a direct improvement of ability over the (4) a…….range tested, that is, the ability to learn increased as the age (5) i……., from childhood to adulthood.
There are several possible possibilities for these (6) f……. . For one thing, adults know more about the world and therefore are able to understand meanings more easily than children. Moreover, adults can use logical thinking to help themselves see pattern in the language. Finally, adults have more self- discipline than children. All in all, it seems that the (7) c…….idea that children are better language (8) l……….than adults may not be facts, but myth.

VIII. Read the passage then choose one answer for each of the following questions (2 pts):
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has mad enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same times, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of cancer is related to her diet as well, especially cancer of the colon.
Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers of ten give penicillin to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medical purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration
( FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.
How has science done a disservice to mankind?
Because of science, disease caused by contaminated food has been virtually eradicated.
It has caused a lack of information concerning the value of food.
As a result of scientific intervention, some potentially harmful substances have been added to our food.
The scientists have preserved the color of meats, but not of vegetables.
