II. TÀI LIỆU ĐỌC THÊM 
1. Ta nói: (go to) the bank, the post office vì người nói thường nghĩ về một ngân hàng hoăc 
một bưu điện cụ thể nào đó. Ví dụ: I have go to the bank and then I‟m going to the post 
office. 
2. Tương tự trên, ta cũng nói (go to) the doctor/ the dentist. 
Lan isn‟t very well. She‟s gone to the doctor (= her usual doctor) 
I don‟t like going to the dentist. 
3. So sánh cách dùng „a‟ và „the‟ trong các câu sau: 
I don‟t like going to the dentist. / My sister is a dentist. 
I have go to the bank today. / Is there a bank near here? 
4. Ta nói: the sky, the sea, the ground, the country, the environment. 
We looked up at all the stars in the sky. (not in sky) 
Would you like to live in the country? (= not in a town) 
We must do more to protect the environment (= the natural world around us) 
5. Ta nói: go to sea/ be at sea (không dùng „the‟) khi muốn diễn đạt là „go/ be on a voyage‟ 
– đi biển. Ví dụ: He works on ships. He is at sea most of the time. 
Trong các trường hợp khác ta dùng „the sea‟. Ví dụ 
I‟d like to live near the sea. 
It can be dangerous to swim in the sea. 
6. Ta không dùng „the‟ với : prison, hospital, university, school, college, church khi ta 
nghĩ về chức năng của chúng. So sánh các ví dụ sau để hiểu rõ: 
o Joe had an accident last week. 
He was taken to hospital. He‟s still 
in hospital now. (Joe đến bệnh viện 
vì là một bệnh nhân) 
o My father goes to church every 
Sunday (đến vì tôn giáo) 
o Jane has gone to the hospital to 
visit Joe. She‟s at the hospital now. 
(Jane đến bệnh viện như một người 
đến thăm chứ không là một bệnh nhân) 
o Some workmen went to the church 
to repair the roof. (đến nhà thờ để sửa 
chữa, chứ không phải đến vì tôn giáo)
